Biography

Brett Aplin is an internationally recognised screen composer with credits spanning many different genres and media.

Brett began learning the piano at six, and attained Grade 7 Pianoforte (A.M.E.B.) by 16 years of age. During this time he composed and arranged music for concert and theatre performances, and for his rock band. Inspired by the music of classic Warner Bros. cartoons, he scored his first short film in 1998. It was nominated for Best Original Score at the South Australian Young Filmmakers Festival of that year. Brett has since been awarded two APRA-AGSC Australian Screen Music Award Nominations and an AFI Award in 2008, and his films have been recognised internationally.

In 2000 Brett was awarded the Annual Pete Carpenter Fellowship (BMI Foundation, NYC), and in 2001 travelled to Los Angeles to work with Emmy award-winning television composer Mike Post. A highlight of this internship was the opportunity to compose music for Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

Brett has since scored many documentaries including 'The Shadow of Mary Poppins' (Lisa Matthews; Hilton Cordell Productions), 'Poker Kings' (Maciek Wszelaki; Handmade Productions), 'The Floating Brothel' (Mark Lewis; Essential Viewing), In Search of Bony' (Lisa Matthews, Two Heads Media), and ''Neil Perry:High Steaks' (Ruth Cullen, Essential Viewing), 'Over My Dead Body' (Ian Walker, VizPoets), 'Rare Chicken Rescue' (Randall Wood, Freshwater Productions) and 'Ten Pound Poms' (Lisa Matthews, Essential Viewing). These documentaries have screened worldwide and awarded for their excellence.

Brett also composed the theme music for the television game show 'Friday Night Games', and has written music for the Australian series of Big Brother'. He has worked on numerous short films including the award-winning animation 'Prelude' (Andrea Brookes).

Most recently Brett scored an ambitious feature length drama-documentary called 'Secrets of the Forbidden City' for the BBC and History Channel for director Mark Lewis and Lion Television (U.K.), and the 2-part drama-doc series 'Rogue Nation' for the ABC.
